My Wyrd Life In 100 Objects: 5 – Moose Tooth

A few years ago, a friend messaged me on Facebook that someone on the site was selling 700 Swedish moose teeth. There wasn’t a set price – they were looking for offers – and I think I put forward £120 or something like that. I didn’t know exactly what I’d do with hundreds of teeth, but I had this gut feeling that they were something I had to have. I went on to make lots of them into key rings (which sold well but were a pain to post because of the awkward shape), and whenever I made new friends, I got into the habit of gifting them a tooth.

This particular tooth is small compared to some of the others. I keep it in my coat pocket to fidget with, along with a rose quartz palm stone and a shell from a beach in Iceland. When I’m out and feel myself starting to get stressed/anxious/over stimulated, I take it up. I like putting my middle finger between the gap between the two roots where it sits comfortably. There’s something soothing about doing that. The entirety of the tooth is smooth enough to rub and turn over between my fingers and small enough to do so discreetly. The other day, I left the house in the coat the tooth doesn’t usually sit in, got five minutes away and had to turn around and walk back to get it. Having empty coat pockets unnerves me.
